Gaze

a one-on-one performance via Skype video chat

Thanks to the development of the telecommunication technologies, now we can communicate each other almost anytime in any distances much more easily than before. This makes us feel “the world became smaller” although we actually know “the world is not so small”.

In this performance, Yoko Ishiguro juxtaposes those two opposite feelings -virtually close, physically far- created by the actual physical distance and the virtual intimacy with Skype which implies the audience to be involved in the “play” that they are in the same bed, gazing upon each other.

The distance between the performer and the audience will be carefully stretched, squashed and kneaded, based on the premise that “we exist on the earth now”.

Gaze was first created in ‘my site | in space 5’ by performance company Switch and developed by Yoko Ishiguro.
